Research: sound

we watched movie clips and learnt about how sound was created. one of the clips included watching a scene from pulp fiction of Mia's house. Sound is used to tell when a new scene is being set such as the sound of a car door closing when the John Travolta's (Vincent vega)  character arrives. The sound sets the scene by hearing the noise of insects that only come out at night, there is a letter on the door from Mia and as it is being read we hear a non-diegetic sound of her voice reading it. As Vincent vega enters the room what we think to be at first non-diagetic sound of 'the son of a preacher man' is playing but then we discover that it is diagetic because it is on the screen and playing from the vinyl player. From the sound we cans tell that Mia has all the power over Vincent as she is talking to him through a microphone from the top floor of her house.

we then looked at a clip of psycho with the shower scene and the high pitch shriek when Janet Leigh is getting stabbed to death. The use of the high pitch sound enables the audience to release that this is a key moment in the film. Before the stabbing there is little sound this builds up the tension between the audience and the sudden use of music gives the audience the final push which creates fright. The use of sound is key as in the scene there is no talking so we don't know how the character is thinking or what the character is feeling.

we also watched how noises are put in to film the people that do this are called Foley artists this is when someone adds the sound after the dialogue has been recorded such as defining the sound of someone walking or a dogs paws on the floor. This is also used to replace words that the director no longer wants to be in the film.
